Ex-albino asbestos workers say they were deceived by federal environmental regulators into believing that asbestos would “eliminate” the disease and, in fact, asbestos in carpets would only cause skin problems.
The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Richmond, Virginia, says that in 2007, EPA scientists concluded that asbestos in the carpet of houses was “unlikely to cause any significant adverse health effects to the home’s occupants or to their pets.”
In their lawsuit, the plaintiffs say they believed they had heard that asbestos fibers were resistant to the disease, which causes hair loss, and therefore that carpets were “safe” to live in.
The lawsuit is seeking class action status for all former asbestos workers.
