Posted October 17, 2018 08:02:46 Asbestos is still a major health issue in Australia, particularly for people with heart conditions, but the government’s recent policy changes to its asbestos laws could see the issue become more visible.
The changes were announced last month by Health Minister Jill Hennessy, who also promised to protect the health of people living in asbestos-affected areas.
The government has promised to remove all asbestos-containing products from retail and wholesale markets by 2025.
The new rules, which were put in place under former Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews, include an exemption for the construction of new homes in areas where the asbestos content is less than 0.3 per cent.
These exemptions will apply to new construction in existing communities and towns where the existing asbestos content of residential structures is less.
These are communities that have seen some or all of their homes built on or around asbestos-laden land.
In addition to the exemptions, Hennessie has also announced a new regulatory framework which will help ensure the health and safety of those living in the areas.
She has also proposed a $500,000 funding plan to develop a new national strategy to tackle asbestos in Australia.
“Asbestos is a very serious and complex problem and is one of the most pervasive causes of health problems in the country,” Hennessys spokesperson told News.
“The Australian Government will not hesitate to take any necessary action to protect Australians and their health and the environment.”
But while the changes will help to protect communities from asbestos, there are still some things that can be done to help people who live in asbestos affected areas.
“There’s a lot of people who don’t want to live in an asbestos-filled home,” said Dr James McEvoy from the Royal College of Surgeons of Australia.
Dr McEvoys advice is to work to reduce the number of people in a house.
“In a lot [of cases] they’re trying to stay away from their family members and to not be around them, to make sure that they don’t have to worry about asbestos exposure,” he said.
“And if you’re an elderly person or a parent, you need to get a specialist that has been in an [asbestos-affected] area, who can tell you what’s going on.”
But it is important to understand that people living with asbestos-related health issues need to be aware of the risk to their health, and to do their own research to determine if they need to seek professional advice.
It is also important to note that while asbestos removal is a viable option, there is still the need to have adequate protective gear.
“I’m sure there will be a few people who will want to use this [as an option] but I would say for those that do, do not do it until they know how bad it is,” said McEvohs Surgeon.

Once you know what is going on and you know it is something you want to avoid, it’s probably best not to go and do it.”

Asbestos-contamination of soil is not something that people with asbestos exposure are concerned about, Dr McDevoy said.
In fact, he said there was a misconception that people would be aware that asbestos could be in the soil.
“It’s a common misconception that the amount of asbestos in the ground is very small,” he explained.

What we’re really interested in is how the soil is affected and whether that affects the health or not.”

It is important for people living near areas where asbestos is a problem to take steps to reduce their exposure to asbestos-based materials, such as asbestos shovels.
There are several ways to do this.
“One of the first things to do is take your home to a reputable contractor to do a professional assessment of the extent of your asbestos exposure and whether there is a significant risk to your health,” said Health Minister Henness, who recently launched a new asbestos research initiative.
“For many people, this will be an initial assessment, but for those with an asbestos problem there are also things like a home inspection to do to get an idea of how asbestos is present.”
The health assessment will also provide information on the levels of certain substances found in the air, which can be used to determine whether or not your home is likely to pose a risk to people with the disease.
“If there is evidence that you’re in an area that has asbestos contamination, you should do your own asbestos testing,” said Henness.
“A lot of the tests are quite simple and don’t involve you taking any specific test.”
The most important way to reduce your exposure is to ensure you have the appropriate equipment to protect
