Posted April 18, 2019 07:19:16The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of a serious and growing threat to the health of people around the world from asbestos exposure.
The world’s biggest asbestos manufacturer is the world’s largest producer of the deadly substance, according to a WHO report published on Monday.
“The use of asbestos products is a leading cause of death and disability in the developing world and constitutes one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in industrialized countries,” the report said.
“The global use of products containing asbestos and other asbestos-containing materials is increasing rapidly.”
The report warned that in addition to the “dangers to human health”, asbestos also causes damage to the environment and human health.
“For the past 40 years, asbestos has been found to be an environmentally damaging substance,” it said.
“It is the most widely used material in the world and is a major contributor to the global burden of diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory diseases, and respiratory infections.”
There are more than 2,000,000 tons of asbestos produced in the United States and more than 1,200,000 worldwide.
It is produced by combining wood and stone in the traditional Chinese way, known as wu, which has been around for more than 7,000 years.
The WHO report said it is “an important source of material for a growing number of countries, particularly China, India, and Japan”.
“For decades, China has relied on this material for building materials and for building insulating materials, and has now begun to produce a range of alternative materials, including polyurethane, ceramics, composites, and synthetic fibers,” the WHO said.
The report said China, the world top producer of asbestos, is now the world leader in the use of this material.
“A wide range of new and emerging products, including asbestos fibre and resins, have been developed for use in the global market,” it added.
The United States is the third largest producer, with nearly half of its asbestos production coming from China.
The use in building materials is expected to continue to increase, with more than 200,000 people in the US using asbestos as insulation.
The study also warned that asbestos has also been found in more than 3,600 different products including fabrics, insulation and building materials.
